Faceless is a novel by Tamehito Somei, turned into a mystery-drama film directed by Michihito Fujii set to release in 2024. In Faceless, Keiichi Kaburagi is the protagonist. Kaburagi is a young man sentenced for a crime he swears he did not commit. Instead of hiding in shame, he sets out on a journey across Japan and in the process, unravels the mystery of his life and identity, while reconstructing and regaining his identity.
Keiichi does not run away in a rage or due to a sense of hopelessness. He first alters his looks, then assumes other names and identities as he continues to travel from town to town. In every new location, he encounters new individuals; some are inquisitive, some benevolent, some wary. It is quite exceptional that he is able to leave behind a series of seemingly light engagements where people consider him to be a caring, genuine, and altruistic man despite the fact that they do not know his true self.
With these subtle interactions, he manages to piece together fragments of information regarding the occurrence that led to his incarceration. In his travels, the movie depicts how the truth is, more often than not, not in the loud proclamations, but rather in a whisper among the stories and details of everyday individuals.
Being considered to be the other half of the protagonist, a detective who goes by the name Matanuki is in charge of looking for him. Although, the more he finds out about his case, the more he believes that justice is not something that has been served. This further complicates the crossroads of ethical and emotional in the narrative, and further develops the film in relation to justice, not purely as a matter of law, but as a multifaceted experience of humanity.
Even in the moments where the story reaches the borders of anger and excitement, it never loses the calmness it had been conceived with. Rather it steadily builds towards and reaches a conclusion, which, rather than conflict, is more about reflection and clarity.
Characters and Performances
The subtlety and strength of the performances in Faceless resonate deeply. In its portrayal of internal conflict and nuance, the film is juxtaposed by the acting’s profundity and the scripts’ subtlety.
For instance, Keiichi Kaburagi, played by the actor Ryusei Yokohama, is a prime example.
