Synopsis
The story captures the modern and blended Vassier family, with Paul in the lead role as the father. Paul is married to Marie and the couple has 3 children from Juliette and Louis, along with Paul’s father and family patriarch Gilbert. Gilbert is suffering from memory loss which transforms the story into an emotionally-engaging. This doesn’t hinder him from losing his fan’s attention though, as he is confident he was the very first player of the card game called, The Werewolves of Millers Hollow.
At the family reunion, Jérôme proposes a new game to help the family bond. Settling arguments between the kids took a while, but in the end, both of them came to a simple compromise. Something surreal occurs right after the game starts—a thunderous rattling, and in an instant, the whole family is transported hundreds of years into the past to the year 1497.
People are suspicious, paranoid, and in a state of fright. The family starts to understand that they are in the game now. They need to figure out the goal of the game in order to go back to the future: to eliminate the unknown beings that are infesting the village.
Each of the family members is granted a magical character to perform, similar to the game. They starts off simple with Gilbert becoming the diminutive but strong Hunter, while Jérôme is the all-powerful Seer who gains the ability to listen to other people’s thoughts. Clara takes on the form of the Little Girl who turns invisible, while the youngest, tech-obsessed Théo, is the all-powerful Thief who has the ability to copy other people’s powers. Finally, we have me, who is supposedly the best character in the game, but is burdened with the most complex thoughts.
As they continue their journey, they are able to talk to people from the past and one of the characters, Piero, is a compassionate academic that assists them in learning the rules of the world they are in. Marie, in the beginning, is a lawyer that tries her very best to assist the people in the village even in the face of adversity. Her assertiveness and her unbending sense of right and wrong affects everyone in the village in this very conservative and traditional atmosphere.
The family, with their unity, valor, and faith, is able to learn the history of the village and in the process, learn about themselves. They make tough choices, face ethical dilemmas and strengthen the family with the bond that they share. It is the love that they share that transforms to understanding and oneness, which ultimately helps them be victorious in the journey and go back to the beginning.
Arriving back to the present, they are able to notice that their journey was in fact real. For instance, they notice a painting in a museum that they think was created during their adventure. The most heartwarming thing, however, is about Gilbert. He has the ability to reminisce about the past and eloquently speak about his feelings towards the family with tender letters during their journey to the past.
