Plot Summary
Early 20th century Hokkaido, Japan’s most northern and exquisite island is where the story is set. A former soldier, the leading character Sugimoto is nicknamed “Immortal Sugimoto” for his ability to survive countless battles during the Russo-Japanese War. Returning from the war, he struggles with the promise he made to his comrade which was to support the comrade’s widow. Sugimoto takes to war to figure out how to support her.
One day, he hears a rumor about a hidden treasure linked to the Ainu, a native group marked to the land, who supposedly possessed a great deal of gold. After being stolen, the treasure’s location was encoded into the bodies of several prisoners who escaped from prison. To uncover the gold’s whereabouts, the tattoos must first be pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle.
During his pursuit, Sugimoto encounters Asirpa, a courageous, sharp Ainu girl. Asirpa also has her treasure motivations, and together, they build a strong, albeit unexpected, alliance. Their adventures take them across rugged terrain, into snow-covered forests, and to meet with rival treasure hunters and intriguing figures from the military and criminal underworlds.
By this point of the story, the two have mutual trust. Sugimoto learns about Asirpa’s people, their customs, and nature, while Asirpa tries to survive and care for her world with the strength, loyalty, and commitment Sugimoto brings to their alliance.

Cultural Themes
Golden Kamuy’s most distinguishing quality is how it reverently and intricately portrays the culture and the people of the Ainu. The film introduces the audiences to the Ainu people’s oral traditions and the customs of their food and dressing. Their connection to nature and their way of life is remarkable.
Asirpa’s character functions as an entry point to the Ainu universe. A deep understanding of the Ainu’s hunting and herbal medicine practices and the equilibrium between mankind and nature is acquired through her. Each filmmaker’s efforts to closely work with Ainu culture counselors demonstrates their commitment to honoring the Ainu traditions.
Visuals and Production
Having Ainu as the main focus of the film, it was imperative that the places that the film was shot in was is to the cold mountainous hokkaido. The film illustrates the features of hokkaido, with the presence of the thick forests, remote villages. With the presence of the hokkaido nature in the film, it aids in revealing the antagonistic and benevolent side of the nature.
The film’s prop and costume design includes early twentieth century military and Ainu civilian dress. These clothes that were brought to life in the film aids in building the hokkaido’s world.
The original score of the film combines orchestral segments with folk melodies, accentuating emotional and adventurous crescendos during the film.
Audience Reception
Golden Kamuy garnered positive reception from both the long-time fans of the original manga and new viewers. The viewers applauded the performances of the main cast and particularly their relationships, with Sugimoto and Asirpa receiving the most notable praise. The adaptation was praised for being heartfelt, intelligent, and for honoring the source material.
Furthermore, the film has received positive acclaim for its educational value. It was noted that the film engages the audience with an emotionally gripping narrative while simultaneously introducing Japan’s lesser-known cultural heritages. Different viewers expressed their opinions on the film’s emotional weight in different manners. While some viewers described the film as emotional, others found amusement in the witty dialogue and the relationships between the characters.
Though the film covered only a section of the manga’s storyline, it provides a solid basis for future narrative installments and continues to uphold viewers’ expectations.
Sequel and Continuation
Following the commercial success of the film, a live-action sequel and television series was released later in 2024. Golden Kamuy: The Hunt of Prisoners in Hokkaido continues the narrative with the same cast and crew, but deepens character development, broadens the treasure hunt, and develops the alliance between Sugimoto and Asirpa.
The series also continues to integrate the thoughtful approach to cultural nuances, making it captivating and educational at the same time.
