“Monster” Movie Review
Monster is a movie by Patty Jenkins that was created back in 2003. The real plot behind this movie is a crime one. The plot of this movie is taken from a real life experience of Aileen Wuornos who was a previous hooker that was penalty convicted in Florida when she was 34 years of age. Most of Monster is based on real life events as well as a psychological crime drama that is engaging and offers a firm insight towards the life of Wournos and especially on her transformation!
Monster unfolds with a conversation held between the her and a cop over a crashed car that she had stolen. Before this conversation she was in a drunken stupor that caused her car to crash. The collapse of Wuornos’s car ultimately provokes her into seeking out some sex in a bar. Tartars was well known tavern for the local whores and tramps of Wuornos.
The rain drives Aileen into a gay bar where she meets Selby Wall (played wonderfully by Christina Ricci), a young woman who was sent by her family to live with relatives in order to alter her lesbian orientation. Despite their contrasting situations in life and backgrounds, the two ladies form a relationship that was .
Aileen initially resists, but soon finds herself falling for Selby romantically and emotionally. (requiring inversion)At the end the love the two women for one another turns out to be the central anchor piece to the film.
Aileen must return to prostitution in order to support both herself and Selby. Unfortunately, she’s raped and horrifically beaten by one of her clients. In a partial act of self-defense, she kills him.
This terrifying incident begins a cycle of violence, and Aileen’s poor mind condition makes her increasingly paranoid and schizophrenic. () After this traumatising event Aileen begins to spiral into violent madness. In the series that follows, she kills off clients and becomes progressively less reasonable. In her mind, she might be at risk of being raped by any one of her customers in future. She starts by murdering one and others as well—either by accident or other.
Aileen makes attempts to quit prostitution and find a normal job, but she’s held back by her past as well as her lack of education among other factors. (). The more Aileen feels like she can antagonize the prostitutes; self exploitation for Aileen becomes a genuinely liberating act. An act of revenge is Aileen’s justification.
Aileen’s record, combined with her lack of formal education and her behavior, makes it impossible for her to find a decent job. Doing more and more in increasing desperation she makes herself believe that in the long run, she is growing the score even by murdering that of the men who exploited and even abused her for decades.
- At first, I’d point out that Selby is portrayed with an inherent unconscious ignorance concerning all Aileen’s actions. 2. Selby in fact tries to rescue Aileen by falsely taking all the credit for the murder. 3. The concluding series records Selby in this case testifying against Aileen in court, the assumption is that Selby is caving in under pressure for fear of the enforcement. 4. The final scene shows Aileen’s trial, arrest and conviction that happens all under the unspeaking dialogue. 5. She was executed in March 2002, a year before the movie came out.
Cast and Crew
- Director: Patty Jenkins
- Producer: Brad Wyman
- Music: BT (Brian Transeau)
- Cinematography: Steven Bernstein
- Editing: Jane Kurson
Main Cast:
Charlize Theron, Aileen Woornos
Christina Ricci plays the role of Selby Wall – Though Selby is partially based on Tyria Moore, Wuornos’ real-life lover, she is depicted as Aileen’s innocent, gentle, and more victim. Ricci’s portrayal is not big emotions; instead, she brings in the character’s softness, a consequence followed by vulnerability in the narrative.
IMDb Ratings and Critical Reception
Critical and public response towards the Monster has been very positive. On the IMDb, this film recorded a rating of around 7.3-7.5, meaning that the storyline, play, and emotions depicted on it were highly appreciated by or significant to a variety of these watchers.
Charlize Theron’s performance in Monster was highly acclaimed by the critics. Her role that is discussed in multiple awards that she got for the part includes:
Academy Award for Best Actress
Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama
Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Tons of critics’ awards that followed from critics’ societies all over North America and Europe
In this way, it was underscored that she had managed to go beyond just reiterating Wuornos. Instead, Theron got into the skin of this woman, who was broken, abused and deserted and got to depict, by flickering in her chance at regaining sanity, some of her humanity and fragile and castrated posture. This also touched on her how director, who is named as Patty Jenkins masterfully revealed this tragic storyline in a compelling yet compassionate way.
Tara Less from our online resource library wrote, “Some critics, however, voiced that the movie was full of sympathy for her, an already convicted murderer.” It does walk a touchy line modern conditions during a’s a school of fish counseling Out of being suggestive corruption to the events creating this apparently bewitching context, this servliness, has been underscored raise abpication for was an her times after introduction Naive in in school performance of first an nature the and “I deception to was of to story donig of form astorm well, that conceicee though distraction athey the poor Shepard, well.
Nevertheless, Monster is a well celebrated film in the first years of the twenty-first century and this is why it is often singled out in the discussions about biopic and psychological drama.

Monster is a truly moving and spooky tribute to a lady molded by violence, disappointment and anguish. It compels the audience to reflect on situations which compel people to engage in unthinkable acts while refusing to condone or glorify them. The performance by Patty Jenkins is one of the most outstanding ever put on film screen. The story compels one to address painful realities of life like poverty, experiences of violence, and the classification of individuals as inhuman beings.
You may not like this film because it is not a tongue-in-cheek, fairy nicely done. But, it is a movie worth mentioning every time the story of the film moves forward.
