Synopsis
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the 26th film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and was released in 2021. It is based on the Marvel character Shang-Chi. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie mixes martial arts and chinese mythology weaving in superhuman spectacles while telling a tale of one’s life, family, and heritage.
The movie centers on Xu Wenwu, an ancient warlord and his discovery of The Ten Rings, magical items that grants immortality and strength of the user. Over centuries, Xu transforms into an ancient domineering figure, creating the Ten Rings organization and controlling world events in disguise. His ‘everything’ suddenly transforms into ‘nothing’ when he falls in love with the guardian of the village he’s plundering into for power, Ying Li. They get blessed with two children, Shang-Chi and Xialing. Wenwu immerses himself into grief, regaining his title of the ruler of terror after Li’s tragic death and starts training his son to kill.
At the age of fourteen, Shang-Chi takes off to San Francisco, where he begins going by Shaun. As an adult, he lives an average life as a valet, and his best friend Katy works with him. Everything changes a decade later, when Shang-Chi is attacked by members of the Ten Rings on a bus as they try to take a pendant that was given to him by his mother.
After the attack, Shang-Chi takes Katy and they both head to Macau to meet up with Xialing. The three siblings are captured by Wenwu, who shares his delusions about their mother being alive and held captive in Ta Lo by a mystical gate. Wenwu intends to invade the village to set her free, but his reasoning is entirely false. The ‘voices’ he hears that lead him to believe he needs to free her is actually a lie from a dark soul-eating entity known as the Dweller-in-Darkness, who seeks to use Wenwu to break the seal that guards its prison.
With the Funny Man Trevor Slattery (introduced in Iron Man 3) and the mystical beast Morris, Shang-Chi, Katy, and Xialing head to Ta Lo, where they plan to fight the villagers and the mystical beings of the realm. There, Yas, the Truth and the dweller Morris sheds light on his father’s eyes as a guardian of the realms, embracing his duty.
The final fight sequence begins as the battle for Ta Lo begins and Wenwu and his army make the final attempt to breach the realms and Shang-Chi’s Wenwu. There is a duel between Shang-Chi and Wenwu which is, emotional and potent, the two go head to head. After the emotional battle, Wenwu does get his senses back but loses them to the Dweller-in-Darkness and in characteristically brutal fashion is slain, bestowing the Ten Rings to Shang-Chi.
Assisted by the villagers and newly acquired Ten Rings, Shang-Chi was able to defeat the
Dweller-in-Darkness. His and Katy’s summon by Wong, indicates their involvement in the larger picture plot of the marvel world so far.

Direction and Production
The film was directed and co-written by Destin Daniel Cretton. Cretton is known for his character-driven dramas and brought emotional depth to the film, setting it apart from other super-hero fare. The choreography and action sequences draw from classic Hong Kong martial arts films, coupled with modern MCU-scale CGI and spectacle.
The production is set in Australia and San Francisco, with extensive use of visual effects to depict Ta Lo’s mystical setting and to design mythical beasts inspired by Chinese folklore.
The Ten Rings are now imagined as worn on the wrist instead of finger cuffs, translating to distinct styles of hand-to-hand combat. The film also makes an effort to amend the culturally disrespectful portrayal of the ‘Mandarin’ in prior Marvel films by introducing Wenwu, who honors the character with respectful authenticity.
