Synopsis

The Martian is a 2015 science fiction drama directed by Ridley Scott, based on Andy Weir’s best-selling book. The movie tackles space exploration in a light-hearted, entertaining, yet realistic manner. It analyzes how science fiction is woven, integrated, and complemented by the human capacity to survive. The plot pivots on the move made by a fictional character, Mark Watney, who, during a manned mission to mars, gets stranded on the surface of the planet.

The plot ensues with the capturing of samples on the surface of mars by the Ares III crew. Suddenly, a perilous dust storm appears, forcing the crew to evacuate the space craft. In the process, the crew seems dead, and Mark Watney is hurt fatally. It surely makes the crew and the planet’s inhabitants very deeply saddened as the crew tries to make their way back to Earth.

People are in the illusion that Watney had died. It is, however, a moot point because Watney survives and wakes up alone, stranded without a proper way to communicate to Earth. It seems that a lot of people surrounded Watney, wanted to surrender instead of putting in the extra work that surrounded Watney, wanted to put the extra in as well.

With his training as both an engineer and botanist, Watney starts his trouble-shooting. In addition, he tries to grow food with Martian soil, nutrients, and water on a biochemical cycle. He also spends a good amount of time figuring out a way to communicate with NASA. His resolve, humor, and his imagination serve as the considerable essence of the film.

NASA now almost the whole world to come to the aid of Watney. There is little joy in this world though, and they have something to be worked on as they think they have spotted a ghost. A team of scientists, engineers, and astronauts is now under the world to devise a rescue plan for him.

The crew of Ares III is also given a choice, though, to stay on the assigned course to Earth or go back in an unplanned direction and give everything up to return for the team. The emotional team spirit, loyalty, and exploration at this time make for the amazing story climax.

The film spends the final scenes with the people from all over the world who put differences aside for Watneys rescue, showcasing his brilliance. Watneys becomes a teacher with the aspiration of nurturing aspiring astronauts.

Themes and Messages

The Martian is a masterpiece that celebrates the endeavors of science, creativity, and collaboration. The message that is being conveyed is equally powerful—especially for the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)—stated that one can remain calm in the direst of situations, apply knowledge, and, most importantly, solve the problem through trial and error.

The movie also propagates the idea of unity. Watney’s plight receives attention and instantly, people from all corners of the globe— including China—collaborate to save him. It is extraordinary how the singular purpose of saving a life can unite all people, regardless of international relations, self interest, and personal politics.

Another pivotal message is that of resilience. Mark is never beaten by the prospect of hopelessness. He remains in control of his thoughts, his laughter, and his aspirations, even in periods of isolation. This is particularly important for people who themselves are going through tough times.

Conclusion

Far from something intended for science fiction fans only, The Martian is a profound film that delves into humanity’s potential and cooperation.
