Synopsis

Deepwater Horizon is an American drama released in 2016, directed by Peter Berg. It is based on true events of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig Disaster that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. This film depicts the actions of the employees on the oil rig, describing their heroism from the lens of personal courage, responsibility, and the strength of collective action.

The movie portrays the main character Mike Williams, who is the chief electronics technician of the Deepwater oil drilling rig. Mike is somewhat of a family person, the character played by Mark Wahlberg is depicted on the movie trying to get ready to go on an offshore platform for a 21 day shift. It is important for the viewer to see the shift he and Felicia Williams (Kate Hudson) and their daughter share, where the daughter is working on a school project and learning more of what her dad does for a living. This scene serves as the introduction of the film and depicts the warmth that foreshadows the heavy theme of oil drilling for the rest of the movie.

Upon arrival at the rig, Mike engages with his associates such as the dynamic system operator Andrea Fleytas (Gina Rodriguez) and the respected offshore installation manager Jimmy Harrell (Kurt Russell). The crew members set their bases on the fact that certain safety protocols have not been performed before the actual drilling processes, and these policies serve as the backbone of the whole foundation as well as the structural sanity and integrity of the system, however, some corporate type persons, such as BP, are head by Donald Vidrine (John Malkovich), and these are the ones who are concerned with the delay and are on the lane of pushing the drilling forward on the grounds of financial gain, thus have no regard the safety of the operations.

Sooner or later, drilling begins and the crew members are on the set of operations that are surrounded by a realm of concern. They are; the pressure, the sustained readings, and the unmet devices with the above tension, however, the drilling keeps going on. Drilling operations is followed by a critical failure with the system of the well, and life on the platform comes crumbling down with the predicaments set at the fingertips.

The crew members withstand, and do their best, to fight the sad nadir that life has set. This is the main disaster about to happen, and Mike sweeps them alongside him in the safe exit with all the tools aligned and ready to get the structures balanced in case if some of them are feeling dizzy or are in a loss of consciousness.

In spite of the disorder, numerous acts of courage and collaboration come to the surface. Andrea, Jimmy, and the rest step up, each attempting to uphold their obligations while also shielding others in the vicinity. The film demonstrates the remarkable potential of commonplace individuals when confronted with challenging situations.

The climax of the movie focuses on the team’s efforts to escape while they rescue others. After ensuring the safety of as many people as possible, Mike and the others, to their utter physical and mental exhaustion, are transported back to the shore. One of the most poignant moments in the film occurs when Mike, after undergoing a profound experience and bearing a heavy burden of responsibility, uncontrollably weeps. Accompanied by a written passage honoring the crew’s efforts, the film closes with images from the day the eleven crew members lost their lives and pays tribute to the courage of the surviving crew members.

In addition to being well directed, the film benefits from a captivating cast:

In the role of Mike Williams, the protagonist, Mark Wahlberg adds an engaging mix of emotional and real life. Throughout the film, he conveys a sense of selfless bravery, devotion to family and work, and tremendous respect.

The work of Jimmy Harrell, the rig supervisor responsible for discipline and safety, is honored on screen by Kurt Russell. Jimmy possesses exceptional wisdom. As a true leader, he embodies the moral and ethical qualities needed to guide others.

Andrea Fleytas, one of the youngest crew members, is played by Gina Rodriguez, whose character’s tenacity may play a pivotal role in the story.

Although her screen time is limited, Kate Hudson as Felicia Williams, Mike’s affectionate spouse, provides a deeply emotional as well as stabilizing performance as a devoted wife anticipating the disarray.

His character epitomizes the friction between safety and business pressure. John Malkovich as Donald Vidrine symbolizes the corporate decision-makers.

With deep-rooted emotional commitment and intensity, Peters Berg, the film’s director, brings well-documented personal accounts to the screen. Berg has worked together with Wahlberg before on films Lone Survivor and, later, on Patriots Day. While other directors may have sacrificed the humanity of emotion for high-level technical precision, Berg chooses to honor the events and the people of which the story is based on.

Screenplays for the film were developed by Matthew Michael Carnahan and Matthew Sand, using “Deepwater Horizon’s Final Hours,” a New York Times article authored by David Barstow, David Rohde, and Stephanie Saul as a base.

‘Deepwater Horizon’ is a movie rooted in obligation and sacrifice, more so than in honor. Justice, of some form, is girded in a sense of obligation, and in some way, the steadfastness of both Jimmy and Mike in the wake of wallowing corporate zeal is indicative of such integrity. Their refusal to cut corners on safety is a glaringly obvious violation of corporate compliance.

There is a sense of obligation to self and society, which, more than the rest of the themes of the movie, is perhaps the least understood. With a measure of humility and obdurate, the crew aboard the Deep Water Horizon are depicted as professionals with a sense of responsibility, pride in their work, and each other.

The theme of family, which in a way binds Mike to both his wife and daughter, is perhaps the most glaring of his motivators to explain why safety is so important. The movie also acts as a tribute to the unsung heroes, the men and women, who willingly put themselves in harm’s way to put food on the table for their families.

Though the focus of the movie is drawn to a single object, the essence is more in the bond of collaboration, the responsibility of life, and the mutual respect which every individual owes to the other. The self-discipline in such primal state also reflects on the savior-like quality one possesses. The ability of a single soul to take charge, exercise control, and extend life to an entire crew, in the face of an otherwise hopeless situation, is a quality depicted in the movie.
