Plot Summary
Ad Astra is set in the near future. It describes the life of an accomplished astronaut, Major Roy McBride who is known for his relaxed personality and the ability to focus intensely. He is one of the most revered major in the field. However, Roy emotionally lacks connections. He has a wife, but is separated from her for a long time. His life is also vacant of his father.
Roy receives an urgent message with specific instructions for a mission. Because of unusual power surges, life on Earth is currently under threat. Surges of energy are thought to come from the farthest reaches of the solar system, most likely around Neptune. There, on the Lima Project, a deep space research station that was launched long ago and run by Roy’s father, H. Clifford McBride (an astronaut thought to be lost to the cold void of space), the waves of power surges are believed to originate from.
To Roy’s surprise, the authorities tell him that his father might still be alive and the cause behind all these disturbances. Sending him to Mars, the authorities task him with the goal of attempting to establish contact with his father. As the mission unfolds, it is made clear to Roy that it is his responsibility to determine whether his father’s actions are endangering the world.
Of the journey towards Neptune, which starts from Earth and passes by the Moon and Mars, there are physical and psychological challenges Roy is Windows. His own feelings of disconnectedness, because of family ties, brought the mission to rest. It became evident to Roy that there is more to the mission than thwarting a cosmic threat, especially given the nature of the connection he shares with his father.

“There is much more than meets the eye in the new film Ad Astra, released on September 22nd, 2019. Set in the futuristic world of space travel, the film goes past the usual science fiction tropes of gadgets and space, and goes on to dig deeper and find the multiple themes the film addresses. Some themes of the film include:
- Father and Son Bonds
Roy’s emotional state is the primary focus of the film. It tells the story of a son trying to repair the bond with his father, both physically and emotionally. Roy is the archetype of every young man who, despite his calm exterior, is desperate trying to gain someone’s approval and understanding. This story shows how, in an absence of a relationship, a bond can form and alter a person’s self perception.
- Solitude and Togetherness
Professionalism and solitude are the two distinctive lines that define Roy’s life. This mission is the first one that forces Roy to delve into the very thing he has been trying to avoid all his life: emotional honesty and the need to establish a bond with someone. The film tries to show that, despite the noise and the coldness of space, the is a silence that has an understanding and a feeling to it.
- Meaning in one’s life and Legacy
Roy tries to define one’s life through the mission that is accomplished and the goals that are achieved. For someone like Clifford McBride, life was all about being a slave to his endless passion for discovery; there was no space for family and compassion in his world. Unlike Clifford, who blindly tries to preserve a legacy, Roy has seems to have a different approach. He understands that the mission is never the end goal, love and compassion have to accompany it.”
- A Search for Meaning
On the path of life, Roy poses the question of whether existence consists of more than accomplishments. The film considers the nature of human ambition, alongside the desire for the undiscovered, with the possibility that satisfaction is not among the stars, but rather, is introspective.
Visual Aesthetics and Style
In the film, Ad Astra is visually breathtaking, adorned with meticulously crafted moon bases, Martian terrain and Neptune’s ethereal visions. Space, in particular, is enigmatic. The quiet, deep and utterly devoid of other travelers is both profound and deeply lonely
To capture Roy’s emotional and reflective tumult, the minimal, soft hues evoked with reserved sounds, together with the longer shots of glowing luminiferous ether, silent planets, and space, with pauses held within stillness, are devoutly meditative. Lovingly designed to feel both feasible and known, the more realistic approach James Gray sought for space travel implements soft, less intricate designs while firmly bypassing a surrealistic caricature.
Sound and Music
The soundtracks are an emotional forte of the film. Accompanied by ambient sound, orchestria, and maestro little wisps of piano, delicate and time layered with Roy’s falling and gathering moments, the cues are soft but utterly powerful. Words are less than necessary for these sounds, for their affection is birthed in profoundest and paralyzing silence.
Reception and Response
“Ad Astra” earned commendation for its intelligent storytelling, emotional depth, and for the powerful, subdued performance of Brad Pitt. While some spectators anticipated an action-packed adventure, the audience who understood the film’s subtle mediation found the narrative profound for the other reasons.
Most reviews singled out the performance of Brad Pitt as Roy McBribe. His emotional authenticity was a result of his ability to sustain dialogues. His delivered lines evoked a certain realism to the film. Critics are also of the view that the film tangentially relates to some philosophical issues of a science fiction novel.
The film is devoid of either awards, or nominations. Its award winning films are its sound and also its cinematography. The film usually pleases an audience who are immersed in some character driven narrative thick with science fiction and a fair share of emotional drama.
Conclusion
Ad Astra is a concerning departure from the routine space adventure films. This film, with thoughtful and introspective qualities, prompts the audience to reflect to steer the gaze to the side. It follows Roy McBride around the galaxy, and through him, examines the human experience of what it is to deal with loss, want of approval and emotional emptiness.
Incredible graphics, the masterly silenced portrayal of the character, and themes bigger than the cosmos makes the film an eternal reminder of how some of the most important and forgotten revelations of life are about ignored aspects of ourselves and not the universe – Ad Astra.
Ad Astra has the touch of classic emotional films. This piece of art can be kept in the collection of a science-fiction lover; someone in search of human connection; an individual perplexed about the future; or any person in search of an impactful movie.
