Setting and Historical Context
The plot of the film is set in Italy, in the city of Florence during the 14th century, which is around the time the black plague began to spread around Europe. The populations of the city are escaping to the country in light of new harvesting opportunities and a desire to remedy the severity of the black plague.
Although these elements of world history are serious, the film, Virgin Territory maintains a balance with the creativity and light heartedness. The role of the plague is to provide a catalyst and an explanation of to why characters are on the move and what leads to the sudden adventures and experiences of the characters. The youthful characters are constantly in pursuit of love, safety and adventure.
Main Characters
Lorenzo de Lamberti – Portrayed by Hayden Christensen
Lorenzo has a deep appreciation for charm, trouble, and card games, as many young men do, and gets him by just fine. Missing a notable heritage, he also has a very naive and heroic personality, using his ‘brain’ as his ‘best friend’ to bathe him out of problems. Deep appreciation for Pampinea should also be earned for his stubborn determination to progress from a streetwise gambler to a loyal, and caring, partner.
Pampinea Anastargi – Portrayed by Mischa Barton
Pampinea’s life isn’t a lamb lying peacefully in the middle of a flower field scenario. At a more elegant stage of life, Pampinea was the pampered daughter to a merchant of great wealth. His subsequent demise, on the other hand, leaves obedient daughters susceptible to predators and vultures. Pampinea earns the respect for balancing dignity with determination, and logic with emotion amid a conundrum to seek a true partner of love and trust to protect fortune.
Gerbino de Ratta – Portrayed by Tim Roth
The role of Pampinea’s life changes with the rising sun, makes sure to feel the weight of the character suffering the plight, the first figure with authority emerging from the dark. Poor Pampinea, clutching on to her adversities in silence. Her ‘victim’ is the powerful figure of Florence, Gerbino. Using his pawns, he tries to prey on the weakness of pathetic Pampinea the moment he learns of the poor woman’s fate. Pampinea deserves a hand for how expertly and boldly she tackles the character’s flaw, ‘The ‘Clever’.
Count Dzerzhinsky – has played the role of Matthew Rhys.
Though he has never met Pampinea first hand, he is engaged to her due to the count’s arrangement. Dzerzhinsky’s character is complex, as there is confusion surrounding his character due to the direct miscommunication and confusion of all the characters in the story.
Eliss – Eliss is a supportive character and is developed in greater depth in the story.
Eliss spends time with Pampinea and as her friend, she has a significant and complex role in the story. Eliss is responsible for a number of confusions, but she is primarily the character who brings insight and joy to those around her.
