Synopsis
Though a sequel to 1984’s Bachelor Party, Bachelor Party 2: The Last Temptation is much more a departure from the original due to its take on the genre, never getting the regard its predecessor film starring Tom Hanks got as a cult classic, or released to the big screen. Once director James Ryan put a comedic touch to it, it was direct to video, displaced with entirely new characters and a separate plot. The spin-off is centered around friendship and the comedic challenges that arise before the “big day,” while keeping a comedic tone on the original’s premise.
The film portrays the life of Ron, a gentle and timid man who is about to marry Melinda, a supportive and confident woman from a very high class family. Ron, eventhough reserved, can imagine a very romantic life with his future wife and strives to pricelessly show that he can provide for her along with her family. Dry as it may sound, its very cynical, Melinda’s family, doesn’t to buy the notion about Ron, given the ancestors and lack of wealth to his social status.
As a contrast to the previous paragraph, this paragraph highlights one of the situations in which a user of the english language can use a euphemism even though the user can fully understand the term that is meant to be euphemized. When a groom is about to be wedded, a common practice among a group of men that the groom is a part of is to throw a wild party. More formally, this party is known as a bachelor party. This practice varies depending on the intent of the practice and its entertainers which, at this stage, the intent is to be a retirement party from bachelorhood. This, however, is more vague. This is the perspective from which bachelor parties are viewed. More reflectively, the practice is a means of recapturing and celebrating the free spirit of an individual who’s about to be tied down.
In life, every individual is at some stage free. It is inevitable that every individual reaches a stage in which the free spirit of a person starts to be constrained. In this paragraph, that free spirit is the bachelor taken off one’s chest which is the fun and the almighty freedom. There is a certain group of people to whom this stage is so exhilarating and liberating that they wish to celebrate it, and that in turn leads to the need to throw a euphemistic retirement party.
Ron was not a fan of the idea, and preferred a more “calm and quiet” celebration, but he did not put up a fight about the trip. Little did he know, Melinda’s suspicious and overly protective brother Todd, was intending to ruin the party. Todd is convinced of Ron’s untrustworthiness, and is dead set on unveiling what he considers Ron’s “true colors” over the weekend.
Upon landing in Miami, the group was surrounded by a lively energentic atmosphere, full of laughter and surprises. While Ron mute and tense, the rest of the group was engaged in crazy and spontaneous activities. Throughout the Ron was faced with an endurance of roller coaster weekend, filled to the tip with obsticles testing his patience, loyalty, and grounding.
The main attraction of the story is not the events, but rather Ron’s reaction. No matter the bursts of energy bursting forth Rand attempted to do the “right thing.” This story is a testament to the level of character and complete loyalty to Melinda that Ron possessed.
Todd still found time to orchestrate plans that, no matter how cleverly crafted, would not stand a chance of sailing smoothly. Todd’s plans skirts the border of humorous and disastrous.
The focal point of fulfillment in the movie is ‘loyalty, love and authenticity.’ This is rather demonstrated by the acts of Ron, his wife Melinda, and Todd, who start to realize that virtues are far more important than superficial appearances, and Ron’s commitment is indeed commendable. With the final shot, the movie delivers a broader understanding of how relationships and companionship ought to work.
Caste and Crew
This movie does not include any of the characters from Bachelor’s Party that was released in 1984, but does try to capture the jubilance of camaraderie and festivity in a modern way. On the contrary, it does provide some brand new and spirited actors that add a more contemporary feel and great dynamic to the movie.
Ron, the protagonist of this movie is played by Josh Cooke. He perfectly manages to combine warmth and anxiousness into charm, and in addition holds a sense of modesty, allowing him to make Ron a more heartwarming and agreeable character.
Melinda is Ron’s fiancee, who plays a more ‘down to earth’ character in this case. Due to the fact that minor roles are often unappreciated, it should be noted that Sara Foster does a wonderful job portraying Melinda, even if the character does not have that many lines.
Ron’s wacky and crazy best friend is portrayed by Harland Williams, who, like Derek, is a man prone to childish ‘geeks.’ Williams, in his own peculiar way delivers the better and funnier parts of the movie by adding his quirky character to the pieces.
The character of Todd who is the groom’s paranoid and overly protective brother is played by Greg Pitts. His character is labeled as the ‘sneaky’ individual within the movie – someone who does not pose a danger but still adds some caution. His behavior provides a way to create additional humor within the story.
James Ryan tried to keep the light-hearted tone of the film as light-hearted as possible while still trying to keep the audience’s attention. Instead of spending so much time on the multiple layers of context behind the film, Ryan decided to focus on the more comical and entertaining aspects of the film.
Even with the film’s title, the genre seems to suggest something completely different. Having read the film myself, I can conclude that the defining themes focus on personal growth, trust, and friendship. In the film, Ron seems to suggest that the most complicated problems can be solved if one is able to stay true to one’s beliefs and values.
The film in its own way does capture the supposed bolts of anxiety leading to the wedding, but it does so with playful exaggeration. Ron’s challenges during the film depict hurdles one faces while trying to gain approval from their partner’s family, going through major transitions in their life, and keeping their individuality in a relationship.
Another important theme is the gap between reality and how it is perceived. To begin with, Todd’s view of Ron is that he is in no way deserving of respect, but that is only because of how meek and dull he is in character. Todd’s opinion on Ron changes over time because he learns that actions and a person’s values speak more than one’s appearance.
With its focus on slapstick humor, silly scenes, and funny conversations, the film construction remains fun and silly. There is no deep intellectual challenge posed, and the film achieves this by sticking to the known method, still enjoyable though.
As for the Reception and IMDb Rating, Bachelor Party 2: The Last Temptation lies on the lower end of the spectrum with the IMDb rating score of about 4.8/10, illustrating its status as a direct to film sequel, rather than a film in circulation like a full blown production. The film has received a collection of mixed reviews, with some reviewers complimenting the fun energy while rest expressing the film does not possess the charm, or the originality, the previous installment of Bachelor Party has.
However, the film was able to find its fans amongst the casual comedy watchers and those in search of light comedy in the recent years BUt you do not have to strain yourself to analyze the plot or the characters in the film to enjoy its humor or have a mid week cinema chill.
In the end, Bachelor Party 2: The Last Temptation is a light comedy film, which married the love of friendship and pre-wedding shenanigans, to a weekend full fun and loses surrounded with heartwarming loyalty. The film’s most important message is the only thing that is important is how you conduct yourself under pressure, not how you party.
The Movie may not reach the pinnacle of cinema mastery, but it does present an amusing perspective of love and friendship, which makes it a good choice for audiences searching for easy, wholesome comedy.
