Overview

“Colors of Evil: Red” is a 2024 Polish crime-mystery thriller film directed by Adrian Panek, who collaborates with Łukasz M. Maciejewski in scriptwriting and is based on the novel written by Małgorzata Oliwia Sobczak. The movie is placed amidst the chilling winds of Poland’s Baltic coastline within the Tricity area. It portrays an unsettling murder mystery that intertwines a grieving mother, a young prosecuting attorney, organized crime, and deep-rooted systemic corruption.

Synopsis

Monika Bogucka’s mutilated corpse emerges from the waters along the shore, sparking intense speculation surrounding her brutal murder within the tightly-knit community of Tricity. This gruesome discovery sets off a revolving door of complex events throughout the city’s judicial and criminal underbelly, exposing layers of hidden rot beneath its surface.

Prosecutor Leopold Bilski is tasked with investigating monika’s death. While probing into Monika’s life to understand her lifestyle better, he discovers there was roughly decade-old cold case paralleling Monika’s murder with unnerving similarities.. To make things worse, not long before his wife’s death while serving prison sentence for previous suspected crime no one had been sentenced for during last appeal hearing , the convicted murderer turned free on parole leash.

Judge Helena Bogucka, deeply grieved by the death of her daughter Monika, resolves to assist Bilski with his investigation. In doing so, she blurs professional and moral lines to pursue answers. Their search for Monika’s recent history reveals her employment at “Dockyard,” a sleazy nightclub controlled by the notorious gangster Kazar.

It is apparent now that Monika had endured sexual violence perpetrated by Kazar and made attempts to report him but was thwarted by an officer of the law on his payroll. It becomes evident that long before her murder, Monika had been living a life riddled with perilous uncertainty, most of which stemmed from the potent criminal underworld of Tricity that sought dominion over her life.

Things spiral out of control for Helena when she learns that Kazar’s defense lawyer happens to be her husband. After confronting him at the Dockyard Club where she gets drugged but manages to escape unharmed, Bilski follows his own lead involving the plethora of disapearing women inexorably linked to the same syndicate. Attempts made by one of Kazar’s associates who agreed to testify were foiled when he was silenced permanently by a corrupt cop right before bringing forth evidence against oppressive state machinery attempting to enforce order through terror or surveillance].

Just as the investigation is narrowing down on Kazar as a suspect, fresh leads come to light. Helena’s husband brings in a USB that contains evidence of Kazar’s activity, leading to a police raid. Although Kazar gets arrested, the lack of concrete forensic evidence marking him as Monika’s murderer leaves the case unsolved.

Then Dr Matyja reveals even more disturbing information; “Kazar kept a bracelet made of human lips”. This shocking detail finally offers irrefutable proof. Nonetheless, Bilski is still trying to piece together details surrounding Kazar which only lead him further from and closer to mind bending truth. The true culprit turns out to be Mario Dubiela – son of local coroner Dr Tadeusz Dubiela. In an unexpected twist, Mario had brutally killed Monika during a sexual rage quest and then father turned his own son’s crime into public spectacle by covering it up through shifting blame and unfathomably editing evolutionary reports.

In the emotional climax that one would not anticipate, Mario confesses his guilt while in turn his guilt ridden father takes his life. Although justice is obtained, each individual suffers an immeasurable amount of emotional fallout.

The use of “Red” as part of the title not only symbolizes the bloodshed of a murder victim but also represents rage, guilt and volatile emotions. The story criticizes the justice system’s shortcomings particularly when those tasked to protect it become its gravest threats.

The themes address familial betrayal alongside violence’s cyclicality along with former distinguishing justice from retribution. Gender-based violence especially Monika’s ignored pleads embodies the societal tendency silencing women’s voices remains a poignant part of the film.

Another critical theme is the duality of truth and how personal biases, guilt, and fear can obscure or twist it. Characters not only solve the murder but they also come face to face with their own complicity or ignorance.
