Synopsis
“Extraction” is a fast-paced action thriller released in 2020 and currently streaming on Netflix. The movie follows a hardened mercenary, Tyler Rake, on a perilous journey to save the son of an international crime lord. The film is directed by Sam Hargrave and is based on a graphic novel, “Ciudad”, on which Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, and Eric Skillman worked. In addition to emotional storytelling, “Extraction” has elements of violence and showcases the chaotic crown of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The film begins with a powerful Indian drug lord’s teen son, Ovi, being abducted by a Bangladeshi drug lord, Amir Asif. Ovi, sick of being controlled by his patriarch, escapes only to be taken. The Father, unable to negotiate due to being imprisoned, gives his right hand the task of getting the boy back, but without a ransom payment.
Enter Tyler Rake. He is an Australian mercenary, and is the only option available. He is deeply scarred both mentally and emotionally. Rake is given the mission to rescue the child by an extraction team headed by Nik Khan. Dhaka, where Ovi Jr. is kept is a crime-infested hotbed with Asif’s forces being very loyal and deadly.
The action begins with Rake rescuing Ovi from his captors using a well-planned and brutal raid. This process does not take long and goes almost flawlessly. However, as Saju executes his plan, fighting against his former allies, things begin to spiral out of control. Now, Asif has also shut down every possible exit from the city and waits with his corrupt officials and thugs, ready to trap Rake and Ovi inside Dhaka.
Asif and his men are not the only ones chasing Rake and Ovi. Saju, fighting from his side, believes the mission is just cruel and begins to take advantage of the situation. On the other hand, Rake is trapped, outnumbered, and out of resources which means he must rely purely on grit and razor-sharp instincts. Together with Ovi, he must take on fearsome thugs and a small army, merging both Saju and Asif’s forces, while navigating through a hostile environment. Asif’s men, Ovi’s fear, Rake’s guilt, and a burden of his own son’s death while protecting Ovi adds to the blend and cruel the twist to the tension.
With a blend of intensity and sacrifice, Rake strives to get Ovi to a bridge for an extraction. Rake is besieged by Asif’s forces and, despite fighting valiantly, is helmmet deep in injuries. Thanks to Nik Khan’s intervention, Rake is able to ensure Ovi’s safe passage and in an emotional moment, he sacrifices himself by jumping into the river after a last stand. At least that’s what we think. The film closes with an enigmatic figure watching Ovi from a distance, leaving the audience to conjecture about Tyler Rake’s destiny.

Randeep Hooda as Saju Rav
Randeep Hooda, a well known figure in India, plays the part of the conflicted soldier who is torn between his obligations to the company and the family he is deeply concerned for. Fans of Indian cinema need to watch this film for the clash of the two worlds, especially the intense fight sequences Hooda and Hemsworth perform.
