Plot Summary
Pechi starts with a young couple Ram and his wife on a romantic holiday in the remote Aranmanaikaadu forest. While his wife is lost in the music from her earphones, Ram stumbles upon a strange site. Curious, Ram approaches a large, sinister tree, and upon closer inspection, he notices a trishul. After further examination, he tries cutting it off only to consequentially reveal an iron nail. When a wooden doll drops from it, Ram is succumbs to a supernatural presence that hovers around him. To add to his predicament, he finds himself paralyzed, mute, and enveloped by fear. The introduction paints an eerie picture for the narrative backbone of the story.
Fast forward a few months, now the story introduces a new character – Maari. He is an experienced forest guard who now works alongside a group of five friends, Meena, Charan, Charu, Sethu, and Jerry. They all plan a trekking expedition through a forest. Maari is deeply connected to the forest and aware of its secrets and, as is the custom, receives an amulet for protection from his daughter which is customary.
While trekking deeper, Maari warns the group of a forbidden area called Maayankaadu, but of course, the group does not relent. Old superstitions have no room for modern day logic and, as is the case with all old wives tales, the group pays no heed to the warnings.
The start of the climax happens now with the group encountering strange bell ringing in the trees as well as hearing whispers. Charu and Sethu discover the root of the strange happenings – a ruined house with voodoo dolls. One of the voodoo dolls and an eerie selfie later, the group is in for some shocking revelation.
Very soon, the group starts to break apart. One by one, they disappear under horrific events. Jerry vanishes into the night, hands appear from trees to grasp at the living, and the presence of something ancient and malevolent becomes indisputable. Meena begins to act odd, and it becomes clear that she is not as innocent as she seems.
Maari, feeling something is terribly off, starts telling the story of Pechi. Pechi is a powerful witch who, long ago, made a dark pact to gain immortality. A long time ago, a priest from a village succeeded in imprisoning her spirit in a voodoo doll and sealed it with an iron nail underneath the great tree. For a long time, that nail had kept the witch at bay. Until Ram accidentally unleashed the seal.
The most shocking reveal is that Meena is a direct descendant of Pechi. She was raised to inherit the witch’s powers and perform a ritual that requires the sacrifice of 13 humans. Her friends are just pawns in this dark game. Even her relationship with Charan was a ruse to bring not just him, but many, into the forest.
In a tragic twist, Maari attempts to stop the ritual but is murdered at the hands of Meena. Charan is restrained and kept alive as the final offering to complete Pechi’s transformation into Meena’s body. Embracing her fate as a friend-turned-executioner, Meena fully accepts the witch’s legacy.
The movie transitions to the final scene, depicting the forest claiming charred bodies as the last victims to the fire. Some of the friends are missing. As new victims prepare to enter the forest, it is clear the evil, along with the curse, is far from over.

Nature as a Force of Justice: The forest punishes those who disrespect it. The mocking of sacred warnings and desecration of trees foretells a doom that aligns with such wanton disregard.
Betrayal and Legacy: The calm acceptance of the role makes Meena’s betrayal of her friends chilling. The metamorphosis from friend into foe encapsulates the idea of inherited sin.
