Synopsis
Prometheus is an adventurous sci-fi movie directed by Ridley Scott which came out in the year 2012. To watch a Scott film is to appreciate a story which is an expression of Scott’s vision of artistry on pursuit of theories wrapped in exploration against the enigmas of the cosmos.
As the movies starts in the late 21st century, two scientists, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw and Dr. Charlie Holloway, make the remarkable discovery of ancient drawings that span across the world. The startling realization that all these drawings depict is human beings pointing towards the sky at a set of stars. They think of it as an invitation by beings who might have created mankind. Shaw and Holloway wish to embark on a mission to chase the trail and discover the secrets it holds.
The mission is funded by the Weyland Corporation and a spaceship named Prometheus is used. Members of the ‘crew’ are the scientists, engineers and other professionals alongside an android named David who’s tasked with caretaker duties and observational duties for the long mission. There is a Vickers, and she is a corporate associate tasked with mission supervision for the purpose of protecting the company’s interest in all expense.
When the team reaches the distant moon called LV-233, they unearth what seem to be artifacts and structures of an advanced civilization. Giant chambers with curious relics of what seemed like an advanced dwelling civilization are scattered within the chambers. Along with civilization remnants, there are unsolved questions that are brought forth such as ‘where did the civilization vanish to, and what are they?’, or ‘what happened?’ and ‘Why were they left behind.’
While Dr. Alice Shaw passionately argues that the creators must be close because of these ‘Engineers’ the others in the team seem to be more skeptical and take the lead as Holloway as the one of the more ‘rational’ ones. While Shaw drifts more towards the philosophical side of these questions, there are some rational aspects that can be taken from the explanation.
The more the team explores the structure, the more they are left puzzled. Scary questions around what happened to the ‘Engineers’ emerge, and what happened to them along with their advanced civilization? Along with the questions comes more concerning ones such as what secrets their advanced civilization’s technology, which had plenty of possibilities. David, the android, further complicates these questions. Along with his intention of adding revelations, his actions of placing the crew in danger shifts the questions from voyeur to puppet master.
In the case of this movie, the final moments do not offer definitive answers, instead, they focus on the questions uplifted from the beginning. Although mysterious and hopeful, the ending feels incomplete. However, the character of Dr. Shaw, despite her hardships, chooses to carry on. Unlike other people on the ship, her aim is not to go back to Earth, but instead, she sets her course to the Engineer’s home world in the quest to answer the questions of mankind’s origins and purpose.

Dr. Elizabeth Shaw, played by Noomi Rapace, is a scientist and an archeologist driven by her beliefs and the questions her profession brings. ‘David’, the android, is played by Michael Fassbender. Unlike other actors, he not only ‘played’ the character but ‘became’ him. The praise and glory received for this movie is a direct reflection of the brilliant performance donned by him.
‘Inception’, is one of the other most praised and critically adored movie Charlize Theron has played in stories. In this film, her character is an instructor who openly and honestly documents the progresses and procedures of the crew and company as they work to achieve a common goal.
In the movie, the character of Janek, the captain of the spaceship, is played by the reknowned actor Idris Elba. Elba nails this character and helps the audience feel warm and full of joy through his character.
Logan Marshall Green, the co-partner of Shaw, fills the role of Dr. Charlie Holloway, who is passionately driven towards the thrill of science.
Peter Weyland is an aging character who is also the founder of Weyland Corporation. He is driven by the mission for personal reasons.
Ridley Scott directed the movie, coming back to science fiction after decades since triumphantly pacing over Alien and Blade Runner. The original screenplay is a result of the hardwork of Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof, who combines philosophical thoughts and cosmic mysteries.
