Synopsis:

Directed by Andrés Beltran and scripted by Matt Pitts, “Quicksand” takes on an emotionally nuanced form of grounded suspense that uses interpersonal conflict and natural peril to construct its plot. Set in perilous Colombia, “Quicksand” follows an emotionally estranged couple as they combine forces for survival after an ordinary hiking excursion takes a violent turn. The dawn of “Quicksand” follows Dr. Sofia Gonzalez, an emotionally compartmentalized medical doctor, as she returns to Colombia to attend a medical conference to which she was invited. Having grown up in the States, the doctor attending the event is in Colombia for other reasons too. Her estranged husband, biologist and residing in Colombia, is in the vicinity she intends to travel to. The couple has gone through a long period of emotional detachment, despite the absence of divorce.

Both Josh and Sofia attend the meeting for which they have little intention to attend. However, the lack of intention does not rule out the possibility of lingering sentiments. Josh, though he is much more expressive and talkative, attempts to reach out emotionally but is met only with Sofia’s emotional walls. After some time having not met, the two do decide to go on a short walk in the rainforest, partly for closure and partly to have some silence together in nature.

As a film about ‘quicksand,’ the couple is in a different type of tension and a protective bubble with one another. Their initial activity does derive from something mundane, but the napkin in the box tends to serve as some fantasy. Unlike the time spent waiting, the two’s ‘quicksand,’ does differ and seems as though to is in a whole different territory of the couple’s initial scenario. But the lack of target becomes a whole different box.

In contrast to Sofia, Josh is in the lane of wanting to create emotional contact as the family is away. As a couple, they are both still missing something and do not form whole. The two are still in some territory in the family is not genuine. As more time is spent together, the two connect more.

Because immediate assistance is impracticable and they are both stuck in quicksand, the couple must count on one another for both physical survival and emotional endurance. The supply at hand is steady and the wild animals closely watching increases Rain flow. The couple is in desperate need of something. The emotional imperative, regret and the conflict s are the major pillars for the dissolution of the marriage the couple is in.

Josh and Sofia once reconnect the moment they are able to. There are no reconnect periods filled with love, just a immeasurable soft gestures, contact and the feeling of the same. Difficult situation is painful pride and all other forms of false elegance.

This is a story of survival. It is a heart stopping film. The physical tension increases checkmate value on the board. The boy needs to work the hardest. Out of all the characters in the story, the boy is the one who is stuck most. He is stuck in a world of both metaphysical and actually. The couple is the reality of the film, all other are mere reflections. There is a good amount of handcraft in this story, first layer is defeat. Each couple have a story woven into their emotions.

The closing sequence of the film is not highlighted by a heroic or action-driven scene, rather a well-deserved and nuanced rift in time. The potential of the characters being trapped in the quicksand becomes secondary to the emotional resolution reached. Ultimately, the themes of resentment and potential that arise from extreme weakness are the core of the film.

The world of Quicksand is inhabited by a superbly small, yet powerful cast that delivers equally captivating performances that provide the emotional and narrative pillars that carry the film.

Carolina Gaitán, known for her role in Disney’s Encanto as well as her other voice roles, stars as Sofia González, a character that is overcoming emotional and psychological barriers as a determined and strong-willed doctor. She plays the role with such nuance that the Sofia Gonzalez is to become one of the most complex. Over the film, she shifts from emotionally and psychologically frozen to warm and honest, and all she needs to do is imagine what that cold summer night might feel like.
Allan Hawco, a fixture in the Canadian film industry, plays the character of the melancholic Josh who is Sofia’s husband. His deep portrayal of Josh is incredibly moving to the extent that even though the character’s life was filled with disappointment, he could somehow manage to still dream of love. Without the character’s warmth, the film would lack something innately beautiful which is why it is crucial to every other character’s triumph.

Gaitán and Hawco’s chemistry is crucial to the film’s success. Their interactions capture the emotions and tension that complex relationships often entail. Although the film is largely a two-hander, and focused on only two characters in a confined situation, the skill required to hold the audience’s attention is a testament to the actors.

“I love the visual and emotional style Andrés Beltrán infuses in each film. His direction focuses on realism, employing long takes and close shots to immerse the audience in the characters’ emotional states. Beltran goes for subtlety and avoids the sensational for character-driven storytelling.

The screenplay by Pitts fuses suspense and emotion seamlessly. The dialogue is natural, feeling most real when characters are in deep reflection. Unlike most screenwriters, Pitts does not rely on fast-paced action to build tension in the film. Rather, he does so through the deepening bond of the characters sprinkled with a looming threat of nature.

Guzmán does a magnificent job of capturing the cinematography of the Colombian rainforest. The natural setting transformed to a character of the film like Sofia or Josh, bringing forth the themes of reflection, survival and isolation intertwined in the film. The dense foliage, moody weather and sunlight play on, which is both beautiful and scary.”

The soundtrack of the movie adds greatly to its atmosphere without overshadowing pivotal moments thanks to the skills of Brian D’Oliveira. The storytelling seems seamless, integrating “pivotal moments of tension, introspection, and quiet revelation.”

Based on the divided responses the film received, Quicksand bears an IMDb rating of roughly “4.7 out of 10.” The film seemed to frustrate an audience mainly for its supposedly slow pace and lack of substance quo to its missing an action-centered backbone to its ‘emotional core’ and ‘atmospheric tension’ the film tended to radiate.

While overwhelmingly analyzing the film, critics managed to note that the film Quicksand set out upon was less of the ‘traditional thriller’ and rather, “a portrait of the characters and their machinations.” The ingenious emphasis on healing within the danger was deeply appreciated along with Gaitán’s exquisite compassion where she portrays a woman who is tender, grappling with wounds of trust, to re-learn the act of faith again.

There were an audience who viewed the film expecting a fast paced action look upon a survival film and were disenchanted with the ‘sparse action’ and ‘minimal dialogue’ the film seemed to offer. People who appreciate silence and contemplation rather than fast actions within a movie, Quicksand offers an ‘introspective,’ and ‘meditative’ look upon love, loss, and re-connection.

The film certainly carved out an audience among those who appreciate stories on emotions, powerful acting, and an economy of filmmaking. It employed an actual ecological disaster as a symbol of emotional paralysis, which provided a distinguishing feature in the genre of survival thrillers.

Conclusion:

Quicksand (2023) is a deeply empathic and intellectually stimulating film that occupies a unique space in the intersection of survival and self metamorphosis. It is a story steeped in two characters who are both physically and emotionally interlinked, inviting the audience to muse on the nature of closure, the significance of expression, and the gentle resolve of moving on.

The film does not look at grand gestures. Instead, it builds the tension based on the emotions that exist between the two characters. Quicksand is a film that works on the premise of survival, but an equal aspect is the romance that arises out of authentic acting, subtle direction, and an environment that enhances both peril and closeness.
